SOL Food at Girard College

At North Philadelphia's Girard College, a private boarding school for academically capable low-income students from families with one parent or guardian, SOL Food students meet twice a week to grow, cook and create together. The students share the harvest by cooking and eating together – and then they share the bounty of the on-campus garden with the rest of the school by providing the cafeteria with home-grown produce and herbs.

Students also work with residents of Guild House West, a nearby independent living facility for low-income seniors managed by the Friends Rehabilitation Program. Working side by side in the garden and kitchen, students and seniors learn from each another by sharing time, recipes and meals.
