Community Supported Shares

In 2011, 15% of Americans participated in the SNAP (food stamps) program and about 23 million Americans are currently living in USDA-classified food deserts. In the state of Pennsylvania, where more than 12% of the population lives at or below the poverty rate, 21% of children are experiencing food insecurity and lack access to enough food to fully meet basic needs. Meeting these needs in our region through connection to a CSA farm enables CSS members to use SNAP dollars towards locally-grown vegetables at a fair price that is more affordable & accessible than other healthy food options.

This year, we are offering a limited number of Community-Supported Shares for the 2012 Hillside Farm season. CSS members receive all of the benefits of joining a CSA: guaranteed fresh, local vegetables and fruit for 26 weeksat an affordable price. In addition to offering more payment options for CSS members such as payment though EBT cards, subsidies are also provided for qualifying members through donations of CSA members, community members, and businesses.

CSS members pay a 33% reduced rate for a share of fresh farm food: $300 for a medium share. Check your eligibilty here

Payment: If paying with SNAP/EBT (food stamps), you will need to use your card to pay for produce every other week during the season; You will be charged $23 every two weeks. Throughout the season, you’ll receive recipes, be able to participate in free cooking and nutrition classes, and have the chance to visit the farm on various days throughout the season if you are picking up in Chester.
